The legendary play from the cult "Gogol Center" in Tbilisi!
"An Ordinary Story," one of the most recognizable productions of the "Gogol Center," directed by Kirill Serebrennikov, is coming to Georgia.
Based on Ivan Goncharov's novel, the play retains a powerful contemporary charge: St. Petersburg of the past century transforms into a modern capital, and the young heroes of the 1840s speak the language of the 21st century.
A production that consistently played to sold-out audiences and became a true hallmark of the theater was banned on its home stage after the Russian authorities shut down the "Gogol Center." To preserve the play, it was revived in Belgrade—essentially recreating all the sets and restarting rehearsals with actors from the original cast, as well as leading Serbian artists. Every element of the restored production preserves the unique style created by Kirill Serebrennikov—it is exactly the same play that "Gogol Center" fans remember from the posters in Moscow.
The entire cast, including 10 actors and 13 technical crew members responsible for lighting, sound, props, and original makeup, will travel to Georgia, along with a container of scenery transported from Serbia specifically for these performances.
Director Kirill Serebrennikov is one of the most bold and uncompromising directors of our time, fearlessly pushing the boundaries of theater, cinema, and opera. His productions are staged at leading European venues, his films compete at the Cannes and Venice Film Festivals, and his artistic direction at the Gogol Center became a symbol of daring theatrical experimentation. A recipient of numerous prestigious awards, Serebrennikov creates a unique, multi-layered artistic language, blending deep philosophy, visual power, and musical expression.
ABOUT THE PLAY
A young dreamer, Alexander Aduyev, arrives in the capital from the provinces—to stay with his wealthy uncle. He believes in true love, romance, and the power of art. But in the metropolis, where money, connections, and harsh rules dominate, his ideals are put to the test.
Facing his cynical but successful uncle, Alexander must make a difficult choice: should he hold on to his beliefs or submit to the ruthless logic of the big city? And how far can a person go when their dreams refuse to come true?
